வட்டவாய்ச் சிறுதூதையோடு
..சிறுசுளகும் மணலும் கொண்டு
இட்டமா விளையாடுவோங்களைச்
..சிற்றில் ஈடு அழித்து என்பயன்?
தொட்டு உதைத்து நலியேல் கண்டாய்
..சுடர்ச் சக்கரம் கையில் ஏந்தினாய்
கட்டியும் கைத்தால் இன்னாமை
..அறிதியே கடல் கண்ணனே

தூதை - பானை.

வட்டமான வாயுடைய சிறிய பானையைக் கையில் ஏந்தி, அதில் மணல், சிறு குச்சிகள் ஆகியவற்றை வைத்து, வீடு கட்டி விளையாடிக்கொண்டிருக்கும் எங்களது சிற்றில்லை களைப்பதினால் என்ன பயன்? அதனைத் தொட்டு, உதைத்து, எங்கள் மனத்தை இடித்துவிட வேண்டாம் கண்ணா! கையில் சுடர் விடும் சக்கரம் ஏந்தியவனே! கசந்த நெஞ்சத்தோடு நாங்கள் இருந்தால், எங்களுக்கு, கரும்புக்கட்டியும் ருசிக்காது என்பதை நீ அறிவாய் அல்லவா?

Oh Kanna! (kannane) the one who holds glittering disc (sudar chakkaram) on a hand (kaiyil yEndhinaai), we are playing a game that gives happieness to us (ittamaai viLaiyAduvongalai) by building sand house. We take sand (manal), twigs (suLagu) on a small pot (siru thoothai) that has a circular opening in the mouth (vatta vaai).

If you come and touch it with your feet and kick, we will become sad. Dont make us sad by destroying it (thottu uthaitthu naliyEl). There is no use in destroying it (sitril eedu azhitthu en payan?). You know that (arithiyE), even sugar cane or jaggery (kattiyum) wont taste good (kaitthaal innaamai), if our mind is unhappy.
